Interlude

In solitude she walks under the moon

Yet prays to Francis’ God as she steps forth

She veils herself to keep from wanton swoon

And keeps her eyes downcast to avert mirth

Her visions have gone black as raven’s night

She sees but naught an answer to her prayers

She’s taken to the hills on dreams of flight

For to escape the mills of town nay-sayers

Yet there, upon the bluff, a woman sits

No face has she, but shines as dark as night

A child she holds to suckle at her teets

No doubt but sure this child is pure as light

The darkened mother’s mask disputes despair

Or so her light, as moon, appeared to Claire

from such darkness fear and worry
    hidden and seemingly pushed away
    something shines, brilliantly shines

    the picture holds my stare
pulls from sadness to the shining offered
and leaves me wanting her to get up
    and walk into the offering
and let go the dark mask
    that hides her wonder

    beautiful Cat

What a fascinating painting, Cat. You've captured a dramatic and beautiful moment in the lighting, framing, and gestures. I particularly like how the dark mother looks to be pulling the child away, while Claire is radiating peace and light and offerings. I think you're seeing your own visions, alongside hers, throughout this series. It's clear how vivid and real this is to you, and you've made it so for us.

I love how her faith and spirit are renewed when confronted with darkness. There is a strength of conviction in Claire, in addition to her mysticism. That poignant final couplet says it all.

A lovely interlude, but I'm eager to see more letters, too! :)

Your image… I just have no words, Cat. Your art is just so engulfing in its beauty. It seems as if Claire is making an offering to the Dark Mother. A prayer, perhaps? Maybe she needs all the intercessions she can get. When we walk in solitude, and seem to walk into darkness, sometimes we are walking into the very light. So dark and lonely, this journey, but, as hinted by your words, ultimately uplifting and liberating.

And, like Sarah, I would like more letters. I'm nosy like that, even if the content is pure fiction. Still nosy… ;-)

Hee hee, yes, I've been painting so much that I haven't had time to allow myself the peaceful state it takes to actually have the vision and write about it. Some kind of visionary I am, huh? Plus there is the garden! We had enough warm yesterday that I could get myself OUTSIDE for the entire afternoon!

Yes the letters will come! I thank you for your words sweet Vina. On offering for sure, because she spends a lot of time in the dark with her visions, and as history tells us, her answer was to become a nun. But I couldn't just let her do that without some serious contemplation in the company of forces of the dark. Her visions have been black as a result, but they won't be for long.
